Post 3: Using outside sources in academic writing

Outside sources are very important when it comes to academic writing. In my opinion it gives the reader an idea on different people’s input on a specific topic or situation. I also think its a good way to express what you are trying to say about the topic as well. One of the main reasons writers tend to use outside sources is basically because they find inspiration in the work of other people who previously wrote on the subject. The outside sources are in the writing to support an argument. There are typically 3 factors that go into academic writing which are incorporating the source in your writing, introducing the outside source, and interpreting it.

When you are incorporating your outside source this is when you are stating who the author is and putting what they said in quotations and explaining how the particular excerpt supports your claim. Introducing the outside source point toward the source credibility and not making it your own. Interpreting the outside source is providing analysis in order to produce prose. In My Doc 1 assignment I used this technique to give credit for an outside source. One of my outside sources was self esteem school.com. For example this is how I used Self -Esteem School. In Doc 1 I cited “ I came across this statistic from Self-Esteem School.com”,” 85% of the world’s population is affected by low self esteem/perfectionism”. Using that outside source I gave credibility to the source and gave the statement it provided just to support my claim.

In Mike Bunn stated in his essay that the goal is to carefully consider the choices  the author made  and the techniques they use. One thing I noticed about Mike Bunn’s writing when he quotes something he tends to separate it from his original text. Usually when we began to lean the depths of writing we are taught to include it along with the original text we are writing.

  2. I also believe outside sources are important when writing. It helps the readers have multiple views to support the author's argument. I actually liked how Bunn separated the quotes from his writing. Maybe it'd be a technique I'm interested in using in my future writing.
